Assam Semiconductor Plant: Tata Electronics to Create 27,000 Jobs

Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL), a division of the Tata Group, is set to open the Assam Semiconductor Plant, India, by 2025. The Assam Semiconductor Plant will focus on the assembly and testing of semiconductor chips for various applications like automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence (AI), and more. Total budget of the project is INR 27,000 crore (USD 3.33 billion), this project is expected to generate approximately 27,000 jobs including 15,000 direct positions and 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs.

The Assam Semiconductor Plant will prioritize three key platform technologies: Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and a distinctive offering called Integrated Systems Packaging (ISP). These technologies are designed to meet the rising global demand for advanced semiconductor solutions.

What is Semiconductor Assembly and Testing?

A semiconductor assembly and testing facility, like the Assam Semiconductor Plant, is a specialized manufacturing plant where semiconductor devices—such as integrated circuits (ICs), microchips and other electronic components are assembled, packaged, and tested before being shipped to customers. The process involves several stages like wafer fabrication, wafer dicing, die bonding, wire bonding, encapsulation, testing, marking and finishing, and sorting and packaging etc.

What Types of Employment Will Be Generated?

The Assam Semiconductor Plant will provide a wide range of employment opportunities, categorized into various roles:

  • Engineering and Technical Roles: Positions like Process Engineers, Test Engineers, Equipment Engineers, Quality Assurance Engineers, and R&D Engineers could be under this role. Candidates typically need a Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree will be great)   in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields. Technical proficiency  in semiconductor manufacturing processes and relevant certifications Six Sigma, Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), or Certified Semiconductor Professional (CSP) will enhance job prospects. Freshers can get practical experience through internships and co-op programs.
  • Manufacturing and Production Roles: Roles like Machine Operators, Assembly Technicians, Test Technicians, and Packaging Technicians. A high school diploma or equivalent, vocational training, or an associate degree in electronics or mechanical engineering is advantageous. Hands-on experience in a manufacturing or production environment, particularly in electronics or semiconductor industries,  and certifications in technical skills or equipment operation are beneficial.
  • Maintenance and Support Roles: Roles like Maintenance Technicians, Facilities Technicians, IT Support, and Supply Chain and Logistics Staff. A high school diploma or vocational training in industrial maintenance, electrical engineering, or related fields is required. Hands-on experience and relevant certifications, such as Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) or EPA certification for HVAC, are advantageous.
  • Management Roles: This includes Production Managers, Quality Managers, and similar positions. A Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, Electronics Engineering or related fields, along with significant experience in manufacturing ideally in semiconductor or electronics field, is typically required. Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma certifications can be beneficial.
  • Administrative Roles: This includes Logistics and Supply Chain Managers, HR Managers, Administration Managers, and EHS Managers. A business degree, preferably an MBA in HRM/Management/SCM, with relevant experience is required. Certifications like Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), HR professional certification like HRCI or SHRM certification etc. or ISO 14001/ISO 45001 are valuable.

Tata Group anticipates that the Assam Semiconductor Plant will be a sustainable project, shall position India as a key player in the global semiconductor industry like Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore. As the sector grows, this industry will create more employment opportunities in India’s job market. So, be prepared for the evolving industry and its potential impact.
